What is Scar Revision?

Scar revision is a treatment used to reduce the appearance of scars. Scars are typically a result of injury or surgical treatment. Oftentimes, they are raised and have a rough or discolored appearance. Although scars are harmless, many choose to pursue treatment in order to make them less noticeable and restore clarity to the skin.

At Eyelid Surgeons of Tampa Bay, we specialize in laser scar revision. This treatment involves exfoliating the scarred skin with laser energy, precisely treating the affected areas without damaging the surrounding areas of the skin. To do this, we use a CO2 fractional laser system.

Am I A Good Candidate for Scar Revision?

What is the Scar Revision Treatment Like?

Your scar revision treatment will typically begin with the application of a cooling gel, numbing cream, or lidocaine injection to the treatment area. This keeps the skin comfortable throughout the treatment, reducing any discomfort. Depending on the findings and Dr. Mohadjer’s examinations and recommendations, the scar may be treated either surgically or with lasers. To begin laser treatment, we will place a handheld laser device on the skin’s surface. It will emit precise laser energy, targeting the scarred skin without harming the surrounding areas. You may feel a warm or tingling sensation during this process, which may take up to an hour depending on the scar being treated. If surgical revision is recommended, this procedure may be done in the office or as an outpatient surgery to remove and repair the involved area.

What is the Scar Revision Recovery Process Like?

After scar revision, you can expect the skin to be red and sensitive, much like the effects of a sunburn. The treatment area may also be slightly swollen. You may have sutures. These effects typically fade within a few days, and the skin should be fully healed within a week or two. Still, much like a sunburn, you need to protect the treated area from excessive sun exposure while it heals. Since scars are often localized concerns, patients are typically able to return to all normal activities immediately following their treatment.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Scar Revision?

After scar revision, you can expect to notice a reduction in the appearance of the treated scar as the skin heals. Laser treatments also stimulate collagen production, which will help to improve the results of treatment and repair the skin. You may not notice significant results right away, which is why we often recommend a series of scar revision treatments. The number of treatments needed will depend on the size and location of the scar, but your results will be permanent once they are achieved.
